Overview
Ram5 is a very powerful left-hand point that breaks over an uneven reef, very close to the rocks. Those rocks make entry and exit genuinely difficult, so this is a wave for experienced surfers who know how to time it. The land facing the break belongs to the military, though surfers always seem to find their way in.
When It Works
The point picks up swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and southwest (SW) is the direction it really wants. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is the catch: it can be somewhat inconsistent, so it pays to watch for the windows when the swell lines up properly.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Ram5 can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for expert surfers only, given the power of the wave and how close it breaks to the rocks. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
