More about Riomar Reef surfspot

A big-wave spot only surfed by a handful of locals for a bunch of good reasons. A very long paddle to a deep, shark-infested reef, this spot needs a strong N swell, low tide, and favorable WSW winds, which means only the locals get this one when it’s on. One of the few truly low consistency waves around. Also suffers from a complete lack of parking, unless you’re one of the affluent local residents.

General: Riomar's inside break is unimpressive compared to Vero's other shorepounds. However, if a good N is pumping and it's low tide, the outer reef turns on, providing an enviable, and rare, offshore opportunity more than 200 yards beyond the beach. Tides: Low Size: Chest-overhead Wind: SW-W Swell: NE-ENE Bottom: Rock/reef Paddling: You'll paddle to get to the surf - the reef's out there. Spot Rating: Can get good on the stronger NE swell and hurricane swells that break on the reef. When small it breaks near the beach and there are better spots nearby for that. Not recommended for newer surfers. Gets sharky and these are big boys - bull sharks.

Suitable for all ability levels.

Tough to grab a spot.

No parking

Fall-Spring, Hurricane

Crowd Factor: Uncrowded. Local Vibe: Pretty mellow overall.

Usually very clean.

This is bull shark territory. If it does not look or feel right, don't paddle out.
