Overview
Roca Puta is an extremely dangerous right-hand reef on the east side of Orrua beach. It breaks over uneven reef and rocky boulders at the end of the headland, running beside a rock-lined sea wall.
This is a serious big-wave spot with a take-off dangerously close to the rocks, a critical first section, very strong rips, nasty rocks, and heavy wave power. It is for expert big-wave surfers only.
When It Works
Roca Puta needs a very large, clean swell and is not ridden many times a year. It works with swell from northwest to north, with north as the optimal swell direction.
The spot is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. On swells over ten feet it becomes a serious proposition, and it begins to close out around 18โ20 foot.
Autumn is the main season, with the peak winter months also noted for the biggest, cleanest days.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is south.
A rising tide is better, and high tide is optimal.
Local Tips
Expect a busy, tight lineup when it is on, often with a strong local crew and spectators watching from the road. Humility and respect matter here, and inexperienced surfers are not tolerated.
Shortboards and guns fit the wave, but this is strictly an expert-only spot.
Water quality can get dirty after rain.
Access
Access is by a well-timed paddle off the rocks, with difficult entry and exit.
There is limited parking overlooking the break, plus free car-park and roadside parking, but it is normally packed when the wave is on. There are no beach facilities here.
