Rodanthe Pier surf guide

Rodanthe Pier is located at the easternmost point of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It's a popular surf spot known for catching some decent waves, especially during the right conditions. The pier itself has seen regular repairs and was extended to 700 feet after Hurricane Sandy. This area can be hit or miss, depending on sandbars, but when the swell is right, it can produce some solid surf.

For the best waves, you're looking at a Northeast swell direction. The pier can hold swells as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and can handle larger sizes, producing powerful, hollow waves, particularly on lower incoming tides. The waves break over sand, offering both left and right rides. West winds tend to be preferred here, and the spot is better suited for intermediate surfers due to its sometimes tricky conditions.

Parking can be a hassle during the summer months, so be prepared for that. Be aware that the pier owner doesnโ€™t want surfers riding too close, specifically within 250 feet (about 80 meters) of the pier. Fishermen in the area can also pose a challenge, so keep your distance and watch out for any casting lines.
