Overview
Rucos is a sandy beach break a short distance north of Mazatlan, and it makes a nice change of pace from the crowded, rocky left pointbreaks closer to town. The beach is a beautiful stretch backed by thick vegetation to the east, with turquoise A-frames peeling both left and right to the west. Being further from town and the harbor has its benefits, and on the best days there are several fun peaks spread up and down the sand.
When It Works
The bank picks up swell from south through west, and it's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft — roughly waist high to double overhead. Southwest, south-southwest and south swells are the ones to watch. April through October is the window, covering spring, summer and autumn. Expect fun beach break peaks with both rights and lefts on offer.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running north to east. Timing matters here more than most places: Rucos blows out quickly once the wind ticks onshore, and it tends to trend south as the day goes on, so early is the call. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better bet.
Local Tips
The lineup stays fairly quiet, and it suits just about anyone — beginners through experts all find something, on anything from a shortboard or fish to a funboard or longboard. Locals can be protective, so read the vibe and give people their space. Getting back out sometimes takes a fair bit of duck-diving, though the paddle itself isn't long.
Access
Access depends on the weather. After heavy rains you'll need a proper vehicle to get in.
