Ruggles is a big-wave right-hand point that breaks over a rock ledge at the end of Ruggles Ave in Newport. The cliff faces east into the Rhode Island Sound, tucked below the Cliff Walk that winds past the Newport Mansions, so you get a grandstand view of the whole arena. When solid south-to-southeast swells swing around the corner, ledging right-handers march into the point. The wave isn't hollow, leaving plenty of open face to carve, and it can link up long and strong on the biggest hurricane swells the East Coast sees.
When It Works
The point draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast (SE) swell the best match and hurricane groundswell doing the heavy lifting. It's usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, so this is a wave that wants real size before it turns on. Autumn and winter, roughly September through March, are the prime months. Consistency is a mixed bag: Ruggles can get really good when everything lines up, but the right days are rare, so time your window rather than expecting it on demand.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to groom the faces. It breaks best on the lower half of the tide, working through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. On the serious swells when Ruggles is genuinely working, you'll want a semi-gun or even a full gun under your feet, and a shortboard or fish only covers the smaller end. If you don't have large-to-big-wave experience, you're better off watching from the Cliff Walk than paddling out. Be ready for plenty of paddling, since the effort scales with the swell. Expect a busy lineup when it fires, though the atmosphere in the water is friendly.
Access
Parking is the real headache in this historic, tourist-heavy neighborhood. There's paid and restricted parking near the break, plus a few side streets within walking distance that are more plausible in winter. Watch for rocks around the ledge.
