Runaways is a beach break on Jamaica's north coast, breaking both left and right over a mix of rock ledge and sand. Along this stretch of coast up toward Montego Bay, constant onshore northeast trade winds often wreck the surf, so Runaways is worth a look on the days a bigger northeast windswell pushes a small, rideable wave onto the coast.
When It Works
The break draws swell from the northeast through east, with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft, staying a small, manageable wave rather than anything sizeable. Consistency is on the lower side, so plan for it to come together only now and then, mainly when a larger northeast windswell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean up the surface. It can work through most of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The small, gentle wave makes Runaways a good option for beginners, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet when it does break.
