Sables d’Or Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sables d'Or breaks over sand and throws up both lefts and rights alongside a set of jetties. The swell angle usually decides the session: some days the longer rights are the pick, other days the hollower lefts take over, and on the good days powerful tubes show up. It holds a touch more swell than the open beaches just to the north, taking the extra size before the peaks close out beyond the jetties.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest the direction that lights it up best. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's a consistent break that keeps producing across a wide spread of sizes. You'll have a better chance of scoring outside summer, when the lineup gets far less hectic. When the swell jumps it can actually be easier to get out, and the rips running off the jetties help you avoid a pounding on the paddle.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind to clean up the faces. The break works through all tides, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a very busy lineup when it's on, especially through summer when the crowds can be full-on. If you keep getting caught inside, use the jetty rips to help punch back out.

Access

Sables d'Or sits in a very central spot for checking the surf, with waterfront parking right by the sand and surf shops and restaurants close at hand. There's a car park with free parking plus paid, metered, and roadside options, along with restrooms, showers, camping, a surf school and a surf shop. In summer, lifeguards watch over a swimming area along the right jetty, which shrinks the rideable zone.
