Salmon Creek Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Salmon Creek is the most popular surf spot in the county, a powerful beachbreak often compared to San Francisco's Ocean Beach for its size and consistency. Heavy sandbar peaks are the norm here, and it's rarely flat, so there's usually something to ride right through summer.

When It Works

The break takes swell from south to north and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, throwing up peaky lefts and rights over sand. It can hold big swells, though getting outside is often tough; if the swell is peaky enough, you'll usually find a natural paddling channel to help you out. Autumn, roughly September through November, is the standout stretch.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Salmon Creek can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. It blows out fairly easily, so it pays to catch it when the wind is cooperating.

Local Tips

This is a wave for intermediate and expert surfers, best suited to a shortboard, funboard, or gun. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet with a somewhat reserved feel, and there's usually room to spread out, especially if you walk south from the main peak for a quieter session. Currents and undertow are notorious. The break also sits at the mouth of a major creek and carries a real shark risk, with several sightings and attacks recorded, so weigh that before you paddle out.

Access

Pull into the paved North Salmon Creek Beach car park off Highway 1, about one mile north of Bodega Bay, and take one of the trails down to the sand; parking is free. You can also reach the beach via Bean Avenue off Highway 1. Restrooms, showers, and camping are close by.
