San Carpoforo Creek is a thick, powerful beachbreak tucked just below Big Sur, breaking over sand at the mouth of a creek. The sandbars here are usually well-shaped and throw hollow barrels, with both lefts and rights on offer.
When It Works
The creek-mouth sandbars are consistent and tend to hold their shape well. The break draws swell from the south through to the north, and it lines up best on a northwest swell. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. That said, this is really a summer, smaller-swell spot: it blows out and closes out readily, so it shows its best form on the more modest days.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to groom it clean. The bank can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup can get crowded at times, so expect some company when it turns on.
Access
Parking is scant and roadside along the road above the beach, and it is free. From there, an obscure trail drops down to the sand.
