San Clemente Pier is a sand-bottom beachbreak that throws up typical peaks, with longer lefts that tend to run sectiony and often hollow. The sandbars on the north side of the pier are usually mediocre, but they can come good when they line up. It's a fun option through the summer.
When It Works
The break is very consistent and pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. Peaks offer both lefts and rights, and it stays rideable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
There's no wind protection here, so clean sessions lean on the offshore direction, which is northeast (NE). It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly, beginner-suited peak, but expect a very busy lineup when it's on, with the local high school scene keeping the water crowded. Longboard legend Rich Chew was head guard here for decades.
Access
You'll find restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand, plus a car park with paid parking.
