San Clemente State Park Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

San Clemente State Park is a fun beach break sitting about half a mile up the coast from the Trestles area, breaking over sand at the foot of Avenue Calafia. It is not the standout wave in San Clemente, but it works as a release valve from the crowds and competitive vibes down at Lowers, and the lineup stays relatively empty despite easy access. Even by Southern California standards, the water here is relatively clean.

When It Works

The peaks draw swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, breaking both left and right over sandbanks that can get sectiony. Summer and autumn bring the south swells and the most reliable conditions, and the spot is very consistent through the season.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly wave that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. The paddle out stays easy until the swell gets well overhead. Expect a fairly quiet, somewhat reserved lineup, since most of the hype and aggression stays down at Lowers.

Access

There is a car park with paid parking right at the foot of Avenue Calafia, along with restrooms, showers, and lifeguard cover. A campground sits on the bluffs above, and you can also walk or paddle up from Trestles.
