The waves here start as an A-frame peak and typically break into a long left-hand wall, while the rights tend to fizzle out quickly. It’s optimal when the swell comes from the north but can also handle northwest directions. The spot works well across various swell sizes, starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and is most fun at low to mid tide, although you can ride it at high tide too. The reef is uneven, so be cautious of the shallow areas and watch out for urchins. For wind, south is the best option to keep the waves clean, making it a solid choice for intermediate surfers looking for a bit of a challenge.

Since the waves are consistent year-round, you can often find rideable conditions even when there’s a light onshore wind. Just be prepared for some localism, as it can get a bit competitive out there. Despite the crowd factor, many surfers find something to love about San Juan, whether it's the thrill of the drops or the long rides on the lefts.
