Overview
San Miguel is a long, tapered right-hand point that peels over cobblestones and boulders in Northern Baja. The takeoff is steep and fast, and the wall stretches out down the line, growing and contracting as it reels along and leaving room for both lip work and the occasional barrel. It earns its reputation as one of the standout waves in the area.
When It Works
The point is at its best on a northwest (NW) swell, and it draws from a wider window running southwest to north (SW-N). It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and this is a wave that rewards size: the bigger it gets, the better it gets, and it holds its shape rather than closing out. The main season runs through autumn and winter, roughly November to March. Consistency can be hit or miss, so it pays to time your session to a solid swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, and get on it early, because the wind tends to swing around almost every day near 11am and blow out whatever the morning offered. The point breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At low tide it turns more hollow but also more sectiony.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and the lineup gets very busy when it's on. Shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and bodyboards all have a place here depending on the day. The bottom is rocky with some urchins, so mind your feet, and give the local crew their space in a crowded peak. A river also empties into the takeoff zone, so factor that in.
Access
Park at the point, where you'll find a car park with free, paid, and roadside options. Camping is available on site if you want to stay for the swell.
