Overview
San Pedrito is a rock reef just outside the dusty village of Todos Santos, on the last stretch of the peninsula's west coast before you hit the glitz of Cabo San Lucas. Don't confuse this Todos Santos with the little island up north that holds the big wave called Killers. This one keeps three seriously fun waves in its quaint jurisdiction: Los Cerritos, La Pastora and San Pedrito.
Being about 45 minutes north of Cabo on the west coast changes things. The water can run five to eight degrees Fahrenheit colder, the winds blow harder, and the days turn foggier. The trade-off is worth it, because the surf here is always bigger, often a whole lot bigger. It's an extremely fun wave, and the main attraction is the righthander, though the reef throws up lefts too.
When It Works
Swell arrives from south through west-southwest to west-northwest (S-WSW-WNW), and the reef is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, which puts it around head high to double overhead on a good day. Northwest swell is what you want, but a strong south delivers as well.
There are waves all year, with the biggest ones generally landing between November and March. That winter window is also when the righthander comes alive, turning rippable and point-like from October through March as northwest swells stack up. Come summer, San Pedrito goes peakier and the lineup stretches out, which makes it easier to breathe out there.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The workable wind window runs north through east-northeast to east-southeast (N-ENE-ESE), so there's some room either side. Mid tide is the call, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, with a medium paddle out to the lineup. Shortboards, funboards, fish and longboards all have a place depending on the day. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and a somewhat reserved feel in the water. When it's really firing, the locals and expats come out of the woodwork and visitors take a back seat. The local vibe tracks the swell size and quality.
Sharp rocks are the main hazard, and some surfers wear booties because of it. Boardshorts do the job most of the year, but January through June can turn chilly thanks to upwelling. The water itself is clean.
