Sandside Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sandside Bay is a quality left-hand reef that peels just south of the harbour, with Dounreay Nuclear Power Station standing as its backdrop. The wave breaks over a flat rock ledge scattered with sand, opening with a dredging, thick and hollow first section before unwinding into a long, whackable inside wall that runs toward the beach.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from the west through north to northeast, with a north (N) swell the best match. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and really needs a big swell to come to life, so it can be somewhat inconsistent. Winter, roughly December to February, is the window to catch it firing. When it does turn on, the lefts can be excellent, either hollow through the top section or reeling as long, workable walls.

Wind and Tide

Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind, though the reef can also hold a west wind, which makes it a rare option when westerly storms shut down other breaks nearby. It needs the tide to push in a bit, so check it around mid tide, with a rising tide the better call as the water fills toward high.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers, and it takes a range of boards from shortboards and fish to longboards and bodyboards. Expect a fairly quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved, though the atmosphere is friendly. One thing to know before you paddle out: radioactive particles have been found on the beach here, and signs advise against digging in the sand.

Access

There is a car park with free parking that overlooks the wave, sitting close to the harbour.
