Sandwood Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Sandwood Bay is a secluded beachbreak on the northwestern edge of mainland Scotland, reached only by a four to five mile hike in from Blairmore. It is regarded as one of Britain's finest beaches and one of the most remote, so you carry your boards and provisions the whole way for the reward at the end. The bay breaks over sand with a few rock patches, and a couple of small reefs and a rivermouth groom some sweet banks. Peaks break both left and right.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, but being wide open it hoovers up any passing swell and can easily get big and close out. That makes it best in small, clean conditions, when there are plenty of peaks and a couple of reefs to pick from and the waves can be as idyllic as the setting. It is a decent, if fickle, spot that comes good from summer into autumn, roughly June through September, so check the weather and swell forecast before committing to the walk.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Sandwood breaks through the tides, working on low, mid and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly beachbreak that suits shortboards, fish, longboards and bodyboards. Expect a very quiet lineup, likely just a few hikers' tents, and it can feel reserved.

Access

Reaching the bay means a four to five mile trek in from Blairmore, where there is free roadside parking. There are no facilities out here, and it is a long way from help, so come prepared. The exposure that pulls in swell also drives strong currents, and the rips can be brutal, so take care. In the warmer months the midges can be fierce too.
