Overview
Santa Cruz is a sandy beach break town on the Portuguese coast, with lefts and rights peeling off peaks spread along the beaches around town. The banks here hold a tonne of potential when the swell is small to moderate, so there's usually somewhere to look for a wave.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and the surrounding banks come into their own on small to moderate swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) wind to groom it — the spot is exposed, so a clean session usually hinges on that offshore. Waves break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Santa Cruz suits intermediate surfers. The peaks in front of town can get a little crowded in summer, but a walk to the north opens up plenty of empty waves working throughout the tide.
Access
Parking is easy, with a free car park plus roadside parking. The beach is well set up too: showers, a lifeguard, camping, a surf school, and a surf shop.
