Overview
São José is a right-hand point that peels over an uneven reef on the far side of Isla San José from Abras. The wave breaks into a bay usually dotted with boats moored up for island and dive tours, and its walls carry enough punch to keep things interesting.
When It Works
São José draws swell from northwest through north, with northwest the best match. It's usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so it takes a decent pulse of size to get going. Consistency can be a bit hit or miss, so it pays to time your session with the right swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. The point favours the lower half of the tide, working through low and mid, with a rising tide generally the better call. Keep an eye on the water, since the island gets cut off at high tide.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the punchy walls suit surfers who can handle a bit of pace. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
