Overview
Saunton Sands is a huge, dune-backed beach break known for its long, gentle, peeling walls. Those slow, forgiving waves have made it a favorite with longboarders and a friendly place for beginners to find their feet. It's a fun, easygoing wave rather than a high-performance one.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from the southwest through northwest, with west (W) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and holds waves from thigh-high to overhead, breaking as lefts and rights along the sand. Fairly consistent and rideable year-round, it's the kind of spot you can count on for a mellow session. The paddle back out is easy when it's small but turns into a chore once the waves pick up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind; the beach is also sheltered from northwest and north winds. It works on all tides, with low tide the best call and a rising tide generally better.
Local Tips
This is a longboarder's spot at heart, but fish, funboards and SUPs all suit the mellow walls, and it's a great place for beginners to learn. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a somewhat reserved but friendly feel in the water. Watch out for kiteboarders when the wind is up, and keep an eye out for rips.
Access
There's a beachfront pay car park at the northern end of the beach, reached off the Saunton Road. Facilities include restrooms, camping and lifeguard cover. Note that the water can be affected by sewage after heavy rain.
