Sawyer's Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sawyer's Beach is a sand-and-cobblestone beachbreak in the seaside town of Rye, easily mixed up with neighbouring Surfer's Beach just a couple hundred yards down the road. The two break essentially the same way. A spit of rock separates the beaches and helps shape incoming swell, but it isn't prominent enough to hold anything much over head-high. That makes Sawyer's a good spot to check when the surf is small; once things start pulsing, this stretch of coast tends to close out and you'll want to look elsewhere.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from east to southeast and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, though it's at its best on the smaller, stomach- to head-high days. The season runs from autumn into winter, roughly September through March. It's a below-average spot overall, but it can be decent when the size is right. Paddling is fairly mellow in summer but much tougher in winter, when freezing water and cold air call for full winter gear.

Wind and Tide

Look for west-northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window from southwest to north. This is a high-tide break, so time your session around high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Sawyer's is a shortboard beachbreak suited to beginner and intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and the crowd can feel a little reserved.

Access

Summer parking is tough here, with resident-only permits along the beach, though access opens up in winter. A dependable alternative any time of year is to park along Route 1A and take the short walk down to the sand.
