Overview
Scorpion Bay is a well-documented right-hand point setup at San Juanico, where a swell can peel along any of up to seven righthand points. When it's big enough, those points link together for rides of up to 2 km. The waves break over boulders and sand.
When It Works
The bay needs a south to west (S-W) swell to reach into San Juanico, with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Push further out toward Punta Pequena and you'll find more size. It's moderately consistent and can go through long flat spells between swells, and it gets shallow when the surf is small.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. Points 1 to 3 inside the bay pick up more protection from the afternoon onshore wind. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it's working. Watch for urchins on the boulders.
Access
You pay to park and camp on the bluffs above the waves, and there are showers on hand. Getting here is a mission: roughly a 14-hour drive from the US border, with a 4x4 advisable, and there are no services once you arrive. Keep an eye out for scorpions around camp.
