Overview
Shit Pipe is a fun split-peak reef sitting across the river from famous Thurso East, named for the peat-coloured outflow that tints the water. It breaks over a rock ledge and throws up both a longer right-hand wall and a shorter, steeper left. The wave is untaxing and a good fit for intermediate surfers. The beachbreak here is usually poor, so the reef is the real draw.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest through north, with north (N) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. West swell won't get in unless it's genuinely huge.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind, and note it cleans up even more in southwest winds, which groom the longer right walls and the steeper left. The reef works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
An approachable, forgiving wave best suited to intermediate surfers.
Access
There's ample parking in a free car park by the harbour, right by the surf shop and cafe. You'll also find restrooms and camping nearby. Water quality is okay, though the river can carry chunks of ice down in winter.
