Shoals Reef/Wall surf guide

Shoals Reef/Wall is a surf spot located off South Kruzof Island, about a 30-minute boat ride from town. It's known for its rugged and uneven reef breaks that offer a unique surfing experience. This area mainly serves experienced surfers looking for a challenge, as the waves can get pretty hefty. Access to the spot is via boat trips, making it a bit off the beaten path but worth it for those who make the journey.

This spot primarily produces right-hand waves, but you can also find some lefts. The best conditions are during south swells, but west swells can also deliver decent rides. Shoals Reef/Wall can handle impressive swell sizes up to 15ft (about 5 meters) under the right conditions, particularly with a north wind. For optimal results, aim for low to mid tides; mid tide seems to be especially good. However, the waves can be easily blown out if the conditions arenโ€™t right, so keep an eye on the weather.

As a reef break, Shoals Reef/Wall demands respect and skill, making it best suited for expert surfers. The wave direction generally fits into the right and left categories, so you have options depending on the swell and wind conditions. Aiming for south or west swells is your best bet here. Just be ready for some strong rides if you catch the right set!
