Sky Williams is a left-hand point that hugs a fringing reef and runs down a long line before tucking into a protected cove, throwing the odd barrel along the way. It breaks over uneven reef, and it shares its point with Mangahume, the right-hander on the same setup, so it is worth knowing which side you are looking at.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. Swell direction sets the character of the ride: a south swell gives a longer, mellower wall, while a west swell tends to deliver a shorter, faster wave. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it is moderately consistent with decent quality when it lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. Tide is important here: the spot really only comes alive at low tide, since too much water makes it soft and sluggish, and within that window a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the paddle out is easier than neighbouring Mangahume, but it still suits surfers who know what they are doing. Watch for nasty rocks. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is working.
Access
From New Plymouth, head south on the surf highway, State Highway 45. Continue a little south of Opunake, just past Mataikahawai Road and just before Watino Road, and park near the small stream. From there it is a walk, following the creek down to the beach where the left-hand point breaks. There is free roadside parking near the stream.
