Overview
Smiths Beach is a relaxed beachbreak that shelves gently over sand, with some wind protection that keeps it cruisy. Around the corner off the point there's a defined left at YCW's, and a campsite sits right behind the beach.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from south to southwest, with a south swell the best match. It holds good form at low tide and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, throwing up both lefts and rights across the sand. There are sometimes reefs working out near the race track, but access to them is tricky.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north offshore wind. It comes to life on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The gentle, forgiving shelf makes this a great beginner wave, and it's a favourite with surf schools and mal riders looking to cruise.
Access
Facilities are well sorted, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, camping, and a surf school on hand. You'll find a car park with both free and paid parking.
