Overview
South Bird Rock is a fun, small reefbreak in the Bird Rock stretch of La Jolla, sitting just north of Pacific Beach Point and about half a mile south of Windansea. It breaks both left and right over a rock ledge and is one of the two main breaks here, alongside North Bird Rock. It has long been a local classic.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with a southwest (SW) swell the best match. South and southwest swells tend to produce the better waves, though southerly swells are known for long lulls between sets. West and northwest swells only manage short, often soft pop-up peaks here and fire more reliably up at North Bird. It needs medium to larger swells to show its best, and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Expect the best of it from March through October, though it can break year-round.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind; northerly winds are the preferred direction overall, while south winds tend to mess up the surface. A kelp bed growing just outside the break helps keep things fairly clean even in moderate onshore west wind. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, though watch for backwash when it fills in to high.
Local Tips
South Bird Rock suits a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on, and keep an eye out for drop-ins. There is a lot of paddling involved, and the reef really starts to work once it is overhead.
Access
Park on the street, where there is free roadside parking, then scramble down the cliff and pick your way over the rocks to reach the lineup.
