Overview
South Litchfield is a sand-bottomed beach break that breaks much the same as neighboring North Litchfield, throwing up scattered peaks with both rights and lefts. It's a modest spot rather than a standout, but the peaks spread out enough to keep most surfers happy on a typical day. Down at the south end there's an inlet with a small sandspit that can come alive on strong south and east swells, though nearby Pawley's is usually the better call.
When It Works
The break draws swell from east to south-southeast (E-SSE) and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly waist- to overhead-high. Autumn is the prime window, with late summer, early fall, and early spring all capable of turning it on.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the west-northwest (WNW), with a workable wind window stretching from west to north-northwest (W-NNW). It comes in on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better bet. Hard northeast or southwest winds can stir up strong currents, but the paddle out is usually pretty mellow.
Local Tips
With its scattered peaks and forgiving setup, South Litchfield suits everyone from beginners to experts, and it takes just about any board, whether that's a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or SUP. Expect a quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved.
Access
There's plenty of public access to the beach.
