South Pass is a left-hand reef break that peels over live coral. It sits off Tulear, a spot sheltered behind offshore reefs that feels more like a big, dusty harbour town than a resort. Across the channel, La Gauche is far less consistent, though it handles some southeast wind and can run just as long on a south swell.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through west (SW-W), with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Consistency is on the patchy side, so it comes and goes rather than turning on day after day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind. The reef breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the lineup stays fairly quiet when it's on. Keep sharks and currents in mind, as both are real hazards here.
