Overview
South Shore - Ala Moana Park is a compact stretch of reef breaks with several good options packed into about half a mile, including Kaisers, Rockpiles, Ala Moana Bowls, and Magic Island. The waves can offer rights, lefts, barrels, and bowl sections over shallow lava, rock, and coral reef.
When It Works
The area is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Swell can come from west-southwest to south-southeast, with the main season running from spring through autumn, especially around April to October.
Wind and Tide
Calm conditions or offshore wind are preferred, with north-northeast straight offshore. The workable wind window runs from north-northwest through north to east.
Low, mid, and high tide can all work, but a rising tide is better. Low tide can make the shallow reef feel sketchier.
Local Tips
This is generally an intermediate to expert zone. Shortboards, bodyboards, funboards, longboards, and fish can all fit different waves here.
Expect it to be busy, especially once it is waist high or bigger. The lineup can be competitive from spot to spot, so patience, humility, and respect matter. Hazards include shallow, sharp reef, crowds, and possible pollution from the nearby harbor, especially after significant rainfall.
Access
You can reach the different spots by using the breakwater and channels, or by paddling straight out from the small beach next to the Ala Moana parking lot across the shallow reef platform. Paddles to and from the beach are long, but it is not too bad once you are out there.
