Spooners Cove surf guide

Spooners Cove is located in Montana de Oro State Park and is known as a thick lefthand point break. This spot is definitely recommended for experienced surfers only, as it can get pretty intense. The surf breaks in front of a sizable and somewhat dangerous rock outcropping, and you can expect the waves to be heavy during the winter when conditions are at their gnarly best.

The optimal swell direction for Spooners Cove is from the west, but it can handle swells from the south and north as well. This spot is capable of working with swell sizes up to 6ft (about 1.8 meters). The waves here break over an uneven reef and produce left-hand point waves that can be quite challenging. If you’re heading out, the preferred wind direction is southeast, and the best tide to surf this spot is around mid tide. Make sure you’ve got the skills to tackle these expert-level waves.

Getting to Spooners Cove is quite straightforward, especially with a park map on hand. It’s a scenic spot that also attracts surfers, so you’ll likely find some like-minded individuals sharing the lineup with you. Just be prepared for the conditions and respect the power of the ocean here.
