Overview
Spooners Cove is a thick left-hand point in Montana de Oro State Park, breaking in front of a huge, dangerous rock outcropping. It never closes out and comes into its own as a gnarly winter break.
When It Works
The point throws a left that breaks over an uneven reef. It draws swell from south through north (S-N), with west swell the best match, and works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. Mid tide is best, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is strictly an expert wave, big and heavy enough that only experienced big-wave surfers should be paddling out.
Access
You'll find restrooms and camping nearby, plus a car park with free parking. It's easy to find with a park map.
