Overview
Staircase Beach is the northernmost, undeveloped stretch of Leo Carrillo State Beach. Variable sandbars shape small peaks that can reach about head high, breaking both left and right over sand. It stays uncrowded and pleasant when it's working.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and lines up best on a southwest swell. As a beach break it is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it comes into its own when the surf is on the smaller, glassy side.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to keep those peaks clean. The bank favours a fuller tide, with high tide the best call and a rising tide generally the better window.
Local Tips
Expect a quiet, relaxed lineup. It stays uncrowded and pleasant when the sandbars come together, so you can usually find your own peak.
Access
Reach the sand by a path down from the public dirt parking lot at the State Park ranger's residence, 4000 Pacific Coast Highway. Parking is free, with roadside spaces available.
