Steep Point is the most westerly tip of the Australian mainland, a remote and eerie left that peels over a shallow, sharp reef of live coral. When it turns on it throws powerful, long tubes, but there is a nasty suck-out on the take-off that keeps the pressure high from the first drop. This is not a spot to underestimate: it is widely regarded as the best land-based game fishing spot in Australia, which tells you just how real the shark threat is.
When It Works
Steep Point needs serious size to break, and it works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It draws swell from southwest through west (SW-W), with a west (W) swell the best match for lining up those long walls. It can be somewhat inconsistent, so it takes patience and the right big-swell window to catch it firing.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean up the face. It comes in on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The combination of a large-swell requirement, a shallow coral reef, and that heavy take-off suck-out means it demands confidence and commitment. The lineup stays quiet when it does break.
Access
Getting here is an adventure in itself. Steep Point sits out past the Carrarang Peninsula, reachable only by an adventurous 4WD track, and you need a permit to pass through the private station along the way.
