Stone Steps is a variable beachbreak that peaks at the bottom of the cement staircase off Neptune Avenue at South El Portal. It breaks over boulders and sand and can turn hollow and fast, with a few sections of reef off to the north. Peaks throw both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Small, peaky swells suit it well, and it can hold a peak from just about any of those directions.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. It's best on mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Keep in mind there's no beach here at high tide.
Local Tips
The lineup stays relatively uncrowded for north San Diego County. Stone Steps is also the home of the infamous beer-fueled Stone Steps surfing contest.
Access
A lifeguard covers the beach, and there's free roadside parking close by.
