Strandhill surf guide

Strandhill is a popular surf spot located right in front of the promenade. This beachbreak is known for its variety of wave options, from hollow peaks to more mellow sections depending on the sandbars. The scenery is nice, and the area can be pretty busy during the summer months with both locals and tourists. You’ll often find a few surf schools around, especially when the weather's good.

The waves here generally work best with a NorthWest swell and can handle sizes from about 3ft (1 meter) to 7ft (2.1 meters). You can find both left and right breaking waves, which are nice for different types of surfers. The ideal conditions are with a SouthEast wind and can work well at low, mid, and high tides. While most days can be decent, it all depends on the ever-changing sandbars, so keeping an eye on the conditions is key to finding the best waves. You might find it a good spot for all levels, from beginners to more experienced surfers, especially if you’re riding shortboards, fish, funboards, or longboards.

Accessing the water can be tricky, especially during high tide when the beach might be cut off. Make sure to check tidal conditions before heading out. The current can pick up when it gets bigger, so be prepared for that. Strandhill has a large surf community, and you might find it quite crowded on good surf days, so being polite in the water is a good idea. Overall, it’s a solid spot to visit if you're around Sligo.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
