Overview
Sugar Shack is a sand-bottom setup around the north side of Tybee Island that breaks both left and right. It rarely breaks and it is honestly not a surf destination, but on the right day it can serve up a fun little wave. Treat it as a spot to catch when everything lines up rather than a reliable go-to.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from the northeast to east (NE-E) and comes alive on more solid ENE/NE windswells. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, with autumn the most likely time of year to find it breaking. The wave tends to stand up steeper on the outside before fattening out toward the inside.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. It favors mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, though crowds shouldn't be a problem. It suits a wide range of surfers, from beginners through intermediates to experts, and it is mellow enough for anything from a shortboard or fish to a funboard, longboard, or SUP. The paddle is usually pretty relaxed, but hard northeast or southwest winds can stir up stronger currents.
Access
Getting in is easy. You'll find metered and roadside parking, though spaces can be tight in the summer months, so bring change for the meters.
