Overview
Sulingan Beach sits on Calicoan Island, just over the bridge from Guiuan on the low, narrow tip of Samar. A left and a right peel off either side of a narrow channel, breaking over live coral. There's real power on offer, and because it gets shallow it can stand up to faces around 8 ft before closing out. The reef slopes gradually and lacks the crevices of Siargao's Cloud 9, though the live coral is carpeted with sea urchins. The original surf camp here was flattened by supertyphoon Yolanda in 2013.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from north to east (N-E), with a northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's a consistent setup that catches plenty of what's about. Both walls are on the table, so you can pick the left or the right depending on which side of the channel is firing.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. It breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Paddling out is fairly easy most of the time, but at low tide expect a fair walk over the coral, so bring booties.
Local Tips
Sulingan is best suited to intermediate surfers, with the centre of the beach, sometimes called ABC, being the mellower part to sit. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
