Overview
Sumner Avenue is a mellow beach and jetty break over sand, best known as a fun summer longboarding spot. It sits out of the way and the waves lean gentle rather than powerful, so sessions here are about relaxed, playful surf more than punchy performance. On the right day it's a genuinely fun wave.
When It Works
Sumner Avenue serves up lined-up, fun surf on most small- to medium-size swells, drawing from an east through south window. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, running anywhere from waist high to well overhead. The season leans autumn into winter, roughly September through March. It can be quiet and often empties out in the off-season, but the right swell lines things up nicely.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the north-northwest (NNW), with a workable wind window stretching from northwest to north. It's best around mid and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an easygoing lineup that suits just about everyone, from beginners to experts, on anything from a shortboard or fish to a funboard, longboard, or bodyboard. Paddling is mellow to moderate depending on the swell. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a relaxed, neutral vibe.
Access
Getting in is easy for most of the year, though it's toughest through the summer months. There are no parking meters or beach tags to deal with. Keep an eye out for submerged pilings, and you'll generally find the water pretty clean.
