Overview
Sunset Beach sits next to the Chapman River at Geraldton and breaks as a beach break over a patchy mix of uneven reef and sand. It peels both left and right, and generally improves the further north along the beach you go. Some beach armouring closer to town has caused erosion problems.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. The long peninsula at Geraldton often shadows it from south swell, but it can throw up some nice peaks when the swell swings west and the wind stays light. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and tends to be moderately consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. It works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly beach break, so it's a good option if you're still finding your feet. Expect a busy lineup when it's on.
