Overview
Sunwich Port is a right-hand reef break on the South African coast, where a finger of reef holds sand in place and shapes the wave. When a solid southwest swell lines up with a west-northwest wind, that same sand gets sucked back up into gaping barrels. It breaks over a mix of rock ledge and sand, and it is a wave for expert surfers.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest the direction that really switches it on. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is middling, so it can go quiet for stretches, but the windows when everything lines up are worth waiting for.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for experienced surfers who know how to handle a reef. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
