Super Suck is a heavy left-hand reef break in Maluk Bay, on the West Sumbawa coast. Like the rest of this stretch, it sits inside a deep, cliff-lined bay and breaks over live coral. It is a fickle wave that waits for a bigger swell before it shows its world-class colours, but when everything lines up it is one of the best barrels around. The name is earned: this is a fast, sucking tube drawn straight off the shallow reef.
When It Works
Super Suck draws swell from southwest to west (SW-W), with west (W) swell the best match, and it needs real size before it turns on. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so this is one for solid swells rather than small days. Consistency can be patchy, so expect to wait for the right pulse. When it does fire, the left throws a critical barrel: take-offs are angled straight into the tube, briefly let up, then wind up with speed towards an inevitable reef shut-down.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can be surfed through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Low tide is where the name really bites, with depth measured in inches over the coral, which is why it is usually left to bodyboarders and the very best tube riders.
Local Tips
This is an experts-only wave, both for the critical take-off and the shallow coral below. Expect a moderately busy lineup of keen, patient surfers when it works, and plenty more when boats descend on the rare days it truly fires. The vibe is intense.
Access
A resort and a handful of cheap losmens sit near the bay and house most of the crowd waiting on the wave.
