Overview
Swamis is one of Encinitas' best-known right-hand reef points, and a genuine rarity for San Diego County, where proper points are hard to come by. The wave peels over a rock ledge and ranks as an excellent, high-quality performance right, widely regarded as the best setup in the area. It sits below the gold domes of the Self-Realization Fellowship, a landmark that overlooks what has become a daily hub of North County surfing through the winter.
When It Works
Swamis draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with west (W) swell the best match. It needs a decent swell to show its potential, but it handles size as well as anywhere nearby and only gets better as the swell builds, holding everything from small days up to triple-overhead. The working range runs from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft. Autumn and winter are the prime months, roughly November through March.
Wind and Tide
Look for calm mornings or an east (E) offshore wind to clean up the face. The reef breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Lower tides speed the wave up and add hollowness as it races across the shallow inside ledge.
Local Tips
This is a performance wave that rewards intermediate and expert surfers, and it suits a wide quiver, from shortboards, fish, and funboards to longboards, bodyboards, and guns. Expect a very busy, competitive lineup when it's on, with a neutral vibe in the water.
Access
Reach the break by the long staircase below the Self-Realization Fellowship's parking lot, and look for the gold domes to find it; you can also check conditions from the road south of the break. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, along with restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand.
