Overview
Tapia is a good-quality, consistent beachbreak next to the town of Tapia de Casariego. The main draw is a semi-permanent, hollow left-hander fed by a stream, though the sandbars produce both lefts and rights. It breaks year-round and has long been a popular surfing beach and contest site, well established on the travelling-surfer circuit. La Paloma, a small-swell option, sits just west of town.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and since it picks up waves all year there is no real off-season here.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) wind blowing offshore. In summer the beach gets some shelter from northeast sea breezes, which helps keep it rideable when other spots turn messy. The banks can work through the full tide range, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for expert surfers, especially when the hollow left is doing its thing. As a popular contest beach it draws plenty of surfers, so expect company in the lineup when it's working.
Access
The beach sits close to Tapia de Casariego and comes well equipped: free parking, restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on duty, with camping nearby. There is a surf shop in a nearby town for supplies.
