Terrace Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Terrace Bay is a remote left-hand point that sits about as far north as the average visitor is permitted to travel. Alongside the point there's a more regular beachbreak, and both draw plenty of big sharks, so this is a wild, end-of-the-road setup rather than a casual beach session. The waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand.

When It Works

The point is an inconsistent left, so it rewards patience when the setup lines up. It draws swell from the southwest through west, with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. The point can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The left suits intermediate surfers. Keep the sharks in mind out here: the wave finishes up in front of the point where fishermen gut their catches and throw the entrails back into the sea, so there's no shortage of activity in the water.

Access

Terrace Bay is a popular fishing resort, reputedly offering the best beach shark fishing in the world, with camping and basic accommodation blocks that must be booked through the National Park office. There are further good waves north of here, but with no roads and access limited to scientists and expensive fly-in safaris, there's little chance to explore them.
