The Bluff surf guide

The Bluff is a surf spot located at Alexandra Headland, popular among both locals and tourists. It offers a relaxed atmosphere, making it a decent place for surfers of all abilities. The beach can get crowded with longboarders and beachgoers, especially on good days, but the vibe remains mostly chill. It's a go-to for those looking to enjoy a casual day on the water.

This spot works best with southeast swells, handling sizes up to about 3 feet (0.9 meters). When it gets a bit bigger, the waves can have more power, especially from the south, but it still maintains a fairly forgiving feel. Most of the waves break to the right, with the best action happening at the point. Longboards are common here, particularly in smaller swells, but you’ll find more rights on the inside near the Corner as it transitions into beachbreak lefts. Low, mid, and high tides can all offer surfable waves depending on conditions, making it quite adaptable for different surfers.

While the longboard scene can sometimes be a bit competitive, the atmosphere generally stays mellow. It's a good spot for beginners to practice, thanks to the forgiving nature of the waves. Do keep an eye on the locals, though – they might be a bit protective of their waves. The preferred wind direction is from the southwest, which can help shape the waves nicely, so check the forecast before heading out.
