The Boom Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

The Boom is a world-class A-frame beachbreak in Northern Nicaragua, and the hollow, dredging, backdrafting peaks it throws are why people keep coming back. It has been likened to a miniature Puerto Escondido: shifting sandbars, plenty of rip, startling consistency, and an outside canyon that pulls swell straight to the beach. The break splits into three zones, with Coconuts to the north, Powder Puffs to the south, and The Boom proper in the middle. It was pioneered in the late 1990s by Miami expat Shay O'Brien, who founded Chancletas Beach Resort with his wife Loretta and their three daughters in 2003.

When It Works

Swell arrives from south to south-southwest, and the spot works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. What makes it special is how little it needs: The Boom turns smaller, more pedestrian swells into overhead peaky perfection while the more celebrated beachbreaks nearby serve up closeouts. Push past two or three feet overhead, though, and waves start washing through and doubling up. Spring through autumn is the window, roughly May to November, over a sand bottom.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast offshore, with a workable wind window from northeast to east-northeast. Unlike other Nicaraguan beachbreaks that ride the Lake Managua effect to offshore conditions most of the year, The Boom tends to go onshore in the afternoons. That is not bad news for everyone: the wedging ramps it produces are an aerialist's dream, and plenty of visitors treat the afternoon as a high-performance encore to the morning tubes.

Morning high tides are the mantra here, at least at The Boom proper; the nearby rivermouths follow their own rules. It works through mid and high tide, with mid tide the best of it and a rising tide the better call.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard. This is a wave for intermediate and expert surfers, and it demands respect: The Boom does not hold big, but it breaks a lot of boards and bones. Expect a moderately busy lineup that can feel a little reserved. Time your trip right and you will share more waves than you know what to do with among four or five people; time it wrong and you will be straddling one peak with three camps' worth of surfers and their filmers. Any hassle tends to come from other travelers or the odd expat rather than the locals.

The waves break close to shore, so paddling out is a two-duck-dive affair, but the rips will find your muscles eventually. Just north of an estuary, the water can get funky after heavy rain, though a steep beach and a couple of tidal cycles usually sort it out. This is also the hottest part of the country, so guard against heatstroke and dehydration.

Access

Roll onto the beach with a 4x4 or a motorcycle, or stay at Chancletas and stroll down the path a few times a day. Don't forget your sandals.
