The Bubble (Hierro Right) Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

The Bubble, also known as Hierro Right, is the eastern half of the twin Hierro reefs along the Martian-looking North Track, just past the beginner-friendly waves of Majanicho. At its best it is a picture-perfect A-frame, with fast, hollow rights and less intense lefts breaking over a triangular lava reef. Swells arrive out of deep water and hit the reef with real power, so the waves pack a punch. Its neighbour just to the west, Hierro Left, also known as El Hierro, is a fun, walling left that works in small to medium swells and makes a gentler introduction to the north coast reefs when The Bubble looks too serious.

When It Works

The Bubble draws swell from west through north (W-N) and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, which on the reef means anything from waist high to double overhead. Autumn and winter are the seasons to aim for, with October through March the best window.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south-southeast (SSE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window stretching from south-southwest to east-southeast (SSW-ESE). The reef can work through the whole tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a wave for intermediate to expert surfers, and it suits shortboards, fish, and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup: the take-off zone is small, there is usually a crowd, and it can get mobbed when it is on. The atmosphere in the water can be competitive. Sharp rocks and heavy waves are the main hazards, so pick your moments and paddle out through the channels.

Access

Drive along the North Track and park overlooking the breaks.
