The Cliff surf guide

The Cliff is located at the end of the road past the Gisborne yacht club, making it a bit of a trek but worth checking out. It’s known for being an average left point break, especially when the south swells roll in. If you’re in the area and looking to catch some waves, this spot is generally recommended for intermediate surfers due to the nearby rocks and uneven reef that can complicate things.

When the conditions are right, The Cliff works best with south swell, but it can handle swells coming from the east or south as well. It’s got wave heights that can range from around 3ft (approximately 1 meter). The wave breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand, giving it a unique feel. The waves typically break left, so be prepared to paddle! A northeast wind is preferable, and the best times to surf here are during mid to high tide.

Since it’s an intermediate spot, it’s a good idea to be aware of the rocks while surfing, as they can pop up unexpectedly. If you’re looking to improve your skills, The Cliff is a great place to practice. Just make sure you know your limits and stay safe out there!
