The Cove Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

The Cove is a gentle Nova Scotia beach break over sand and rock, and one of the friendlier options around when you want a softer wave. It breaks as an a-frame that stays forgiving on the takeoff but can wall up on the inside when swell and tide line up. On the right day it delivers a decent, well-shaped wave.

When It Works

Swell arriving from southwest through southeast is what lights this place up, and the break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft. Autumn and winter are the seasons to watch, driven by storms: tropical cyclones through late summer and fall, then frontal systems from late fall into spring. When there is real size running, expect the paddle out to take some effort.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind to clean things up. The Cove works on low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Intermediates will get the most out of it, and the softer a-frame makes it approachable for beginners too. Shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards all have a place here depending on the day. The lineup is usually moderately busy and easygoing, though it fills in when the waves are pumping. Winter water and air temperatures get cold, so come dressed for it.
