The Fence is located at the far end of Kings Beach, right where it meets the extensive harbour wall. This spot is known for producing wedging left peaks thanks to the wave angle. It can get pretty hollow, but you'll need to spend some time figuring out which waves offer that perfect bounce. While it may have lost some of its former glory, it still attracts crowds on weekends looking for good surf.
The surf here works best with a high tide and can handle swell sizes of up to 3ft (about 0.9 meters). It's primarily a beach break, so expect both lefts and rights depending on the swell direction. The optimal swell direction is Southeast, but it can also handle swells coming from the Northeast and Southwest. For the best experience, aim for west winds, and be prepared for a challenge as this spot is suited for expert surfers. When the conditions align just right, you can score some meaty barrels or a fun, smashable wall when the swell is slightly smaller.
This wave tends to attract bodyboarders who can be a bit protective of their turf, so it's something to keep in mind if you're heading out. The area around the harbour docks with trains and cranes can be a bit tricky, so it's usually best to park at the waterslide and walk up Kings Beach. Sometimes, especially at lower tides, Kings Beach can offer decent waves too if The Fence isn’t doing its thing.
